Bread talk Questions and Answers

Q: How many calories are in a bread?

A: Bread is not a high-calorie food. An average slice of bread contains 80 calories but the calories really start to add up when bread is topped with lots of butter, margarine, peanut butter or mayonnaise. If you want to control your weight, stick to jam, low fat spreads, cottage cheese or plain yoghurt.

Q: What to do with days-old bread?

A: You can slice it and grill it for bruschetta. Cut it up to make bread pudding, croutons, bread salad or stuffing. You can make bread crumbs and use it as stuffings and thickeners in soups and dips.

Q: What is the best way to store the bread?

A: To store the bread at its very best, here are a few handy tips to make sure you get the most from your loaf.

  • Store bread in a cool dry place. Bread will keep its freshness longer when stored properly.
  • Be sure to keep the bag tightly sealed. Use our exclusive G-lock to reseal the bag.
  • You may store remaining bread in refrigerator to prolong freshness. Then reheat in toaster for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Always keep the bread away from items with strong smell such as onions, detergents, soaps, etc. as these may affect the bread’s taste and aroma.

Q: Is skipping breakfast a good way to lose weight?

A: People who regularly skip breakfast are often fatter because they get hungry later on in the day and snack on high calorie foods. Eating a healthy high carbohydrate breakfast based on bread or cereals actually improves your energy levels and makes you less likely to crave for mid-morning snack or chocolate bar.

Q: What’s the difference between whole wheat and white bread?

A: Both breads are made from wheat flour. Whole wheat is composed of the entire kernel-the bran, germ and endosperm. White bread is milled from only the endosperm. Both whole wheat and white breads are high in complex carbohydrates and low in fat.
